Expect crusher run to shrink 10-15% as it is compacted from its loose truck depth. Ordering only to the finished measurement can leave the base half an inch shallow, so the calculator has its +10% allowance turned on. In Maine, Bank Run Gravel, pit gravel, Type D gravel, and 2-inch-minus material can refer to this product: crushed stone with fines included, at about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, forming a surface tires are less likely to push aside.

Calculate for finished depth

  1. First, find the footprint in feet. Multiply length by width for a lane, or use the pad measurements.
  2. Enter the required compacted depth for the finished layer: 4 inches for paths and pavers, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 beneath trucks.
  3. Find cubic feet / 27 = yards, then x 1.5 = tons, with the +10% allowance left on. Specifications refer to the layer after rolling.
Tons = (Area sq ft × Compacted depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × 1.5 × 1.10

Recommended uses and limits

  • For a driveway base, compact 4-6 inches first. Finish with 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel as the travel layer.
  • For a low-cost camp road, crusher run by itself can form a usable surface. It will be dusty during summer and calls for regrading every 2-4 years.
  • Build paver or slab bases to 4 inches, compacting in 2-inch layers. The Paver Base Calculator calculates the complete paver system.
  • For equipment pads, place 4 inches over stripped ground, or 6 on soft soil.
  • Keep crusher run out of a French drain. Its fines help it bind but also retain water; use clean #57 or drain rock where water needs to move through.

Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad

For two hundred square feet at a compacted 4 inches, calculate 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, which is 3.7 tons. Include the allowance and plan on 4 tons. Put down half the material and compact it, then place the remaining half and compact once more. In Maine's freeze-thaw conditions, 2 lifts at 2 inches each hold up longer than a single 4-inch layer, and an afternoon plate-compactor rental costs less than repairing the first pothole.

Delivery guidance

  • Schedule the base stone and surface stone together to keep work on track. Either option has free delivery.
  • Have the load placed at the distant end, then work the material back toward the pile. On large pads, moving downhill instead of uphill can save a full day.
  • Before compaction, lightly mist each lift. Damp crusher run tightens more than dry material.
  • Leave a wheelbarrow-load aside for repairs. Road crews use this same material for potholes, and eventually you will need some too.

Pricing overview

Crusher run is made during crushing, unlike washed and sorted stone. Adding the +10% allowance to a 4-ton order can prevent the need for another half-ton delivery. Review the Crusher Run product page for its per-ton price, compare Road Base, and arrange both driveway layers with one free delivery.

Crusher run, Bank Run Gravel, pit gravel, and Type D gravel questions

How much crusher run is required for a driveway?
Begin with the lane footprint. For a compacted layer of 4-6 inches, calculate at 1.5 tons per yard and include 10%. A 50 x 10 ft lane at 4 inches works out to roughly 10 tons delivered.
What is the weight of a yard of crusher run?
One cubic yard weighs about 3,000 lb, or 1.5 tons, with a little extra weight after rain. Fine material fills the gaps among the stones, accounting for the added weight compared with clean gravel.
How do crusher run and gravel differ?
Unlike screened-clean products such as #57, crusher run retains stone dust. That dust helps bases compact firmly; clean stone remains loose for drainage and surface use. A driveway commonly uses the compacted layer first, followed by clean stone.
Are crush and run and crusher run identical?
They are regional terms for the same material. Bank Run Gravel, pit gravel, Type D gravel, and 2 inch minus describe the same family of blends. Any of these names can be used when ordering.
Can crusher run serve as the top surface?
Yes, on rural or lightly traveled drives. It forms a stable crust through changing weather, though dry conditions create dust and regrading is needed every few years. A later 2-inch #57 topping reduces both issues.
How much does crusher run shrink during compaction?
Allow for ten to fifteen percent of compaction. A loose 4-inch layer compacts to around 3.5 inches. That is why the calculator starts with an allowance and specifications list compacted depth.
