Add your project measurements
One cubic yard measures 3 x 3 x 3 feet. Bulk materials are sold by that cube or by the ton, so ordering starts with turning the area of your project into one of those measures. These tools make that conversion for 24 materials we carry, using each material's actual cubic-yard weight. Shredded mulch is about 600 lb per yard. Crusher run is about 3,000 lb per yard. The volume is identical, but the latter weighs five times as much. That difference is why a general aggregate calculator can miss the tonnage while a material-based calculator accounts for it.

Calculation method
Calculate volume from the footprint and depth. First multiply the length and width, both in feet. Convert the depth to feet by dividing inches by 12, then multiply to get cubic feet. Divide that result by 27 to find cubic yards. Apply the material density to the yardage for tons. The calculation works the same when measurements are provided by phone.
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)
Depth can make or break an estimate. It is easy to measure the area and then make a rough depth guess. Yet a 10 x 10 patio at 2 inches takes half as much stone as that patio at 4 inches. Check the material page for depths suited to its intended uses when you need direction.

Match material to the project
- For a new driveway or parking pad, figure the crusher run or road base below separately from the driveway gravel or #57 stone above. Use one calculator for each layer.
- For pooled water, a wet trench, or a French drain, allow clean #57 or drain rock at 12 inches or deeper.
- In planting beds, place shredded mulch around plants. Choose river rock for a border that does not need refreshing.
- For a bare or sparse lawn, spread screened topsoil 4 to 6 inches deep before seed or sod.
- Use fill dirt to build up grade or fill a hole. Keep topsoil for the final 4 to 6 inches at the surface.
- Build a paver patio with compacted base and a 1 inch bedding-sand layer. The Paver Base and Paver Sand calculators calculate the layers separately.
- For playground fall zones, maintain pea gravel at 9 to 12 inches deep.
- Place riprap over fabric in layers of 12 inches or more to address an eroding bank or shoreline.
