Putting lighter aggregate at a shorefront edge or culvert discharge can be a costly mistake in Maine. Moving water can shift it aside and work directly on the soil. RipRap is made for stream banks, shorelines, slopes, drainage channels, and culvert outlets where a heavy stone surface is needed against erosion.
Glacial till, ledge near grade, and deep frost can complicate drainage around camp roads and shorefront property from Casco Bay through Downeast. Set RipRap along the actual route water follows, especially where drainage must move sideways across shallow ledge instead of soaking downward. This material belongs on the exposed bank, channel, or outlet area, not as general driveway fill. Keeping the stone at the water-facing surface helps protect the ground where runoff is concentrated during thawing conditions.

Pond dam solid again after mud season
The dam on our pond had a soft spot where spring runoff kept eating at the base, so we lined it with about seven tons of riprap before it turned into a real problem. Shoreline finally stops eroding every storm
