Open the calculatorMaine Rock Supply sells gravel and aggregate delivery in Athens, ME to two kinds of buyers: contractors setting grades on camp roads and pads, and homeowners patching a drive or bedding a patio. Both need the same thing, the right material named the way this market names it.
That starts with Type A gravel. From there the choice depends on what the material has to do.
Across the Central hills and Penobscot Valley, the ground is rolling uplands of dense stony till over slate, schist and granite. Dense till with a hardpan layer sheds water sideways rather than down, so ground stays saturated through snowmelt.
A patio or walkway built on a thin base over that till shows it fast. The surface rocks, joints open, and flatwork settles unevenly once the thaw works the subgrade loose.
The fix is a base that spreads load and a bedding layer that stays flat and drainable. Stone dust, also called screenings or crusher dust, is the New England default under pavers, flagstone and walkway stone because it beds flat and holds its shape.
Frost has to be fully out before base can be compacted, and the working window closes earlier in the northern hill towns than it does in southern Maine. Cold interior winters bring deep frost and a heavy thaw that softens gravel roads well into spring.
Bedding under pavers and flatwork is where the material choice shows first. Get that layer right and the surface above it stays true through freeze and thaw.
Stone Dust is the bedding and setting bed for pavers, flagstone and patio stone. It compacts to a firm, flat surface under flatwork and fills the joints between units.
Under the bedding comes the structural base, and that is Type A Gravel. It is the Maine base course.
It builds driveways, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases.
Where grade has to come up before a base course goes on, Bank Run Gravel does the bulk fill. Bank run comes out of the pit as it lies, unprocessed, so it is a filler course rather than a finished driving surface.
For the running surface on a drive or camp road, Driveway Gravel is the 3/4 inch crushed gravel this market sells for that job. It sits on top of the base and takes the traffic.
Two more that fit patio and walkway work: 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel, which Maine yards call pea stone, for walkways, dog runs and play areas, and Washed Sand for paver bedding and concrete work.
Order online and pick your quantity by the ton or by the yard. If you are not sure how much a patio base or a drive course takes, each product page has a calculator to size the load before you check out.
Choose a delivery date at checkout and a dump truck tips the load on site in one pile. From there it is your material to move and place.
Maine Rock Supply delivers across Somerset County, including Skowhegan, Fairfield, Madison, Pittsfield and Norridgewock. Athens sits in the same county, so the same delivery applies.
Type A gravel is the Maine base course, and it builds the compacted base of a drive. On top of it, 3/4 inch crushed gravel, sold here as driveway gravel, forms the running surface.
Where grade has to come up first, bank run gravel fills before either course goes down.
It depends on the area you are covering and the depth you want, so there is no single figure. Each product page has a calculator, and quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard.
