Open the calculatorMaine Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Scarborough, ME. The working season here runs from the end of mud season into late fall, and Type A gravel is the base course most of that work starts from.
Order online by the ton or the yard, pick a delivery date, and a dump truck tips the load on site.
Across the Southern coast and Presumpscot clay lowland, marine silt and clay sits under the topsoil. That clay takes water very slowly, so yards and drives sit wet through mud season.
A thin base over that ground shows the failure fast. The stone punches down into soft clay, the surface ruts, and the edges break away.
The fix is a compacted Type A gravel course over the clay, with a clean washed stone layer where water has to move. On the higher terraces, sand and gravel outwash drains far better than the lowland clay.
Winter storms bring the highest flood risk to low coastal lots, and low ground near tidal water backs up at high tide. Gravel drives and walks also heave every spring as the frost comes out.
Fines and screenings do the fine work on paths and walkways here. Stone dust, also called screenings or crusher dust, is the New England default under flatwork.
It beds pavers, flagstone and patio stone, and it sets walkway stone. It packs tight because of the fines in it, which is why it holds a bedding layer in place.
Stone Dust is not a drainage material. Water moves through it slowly, so it belongs under flatwork, not in a trench.
For a walking surface, 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel is what Maine yards call pea stone. It goes on walkways, dog runs, play areas and pipe bedding.
Pea stone is rounded, so it stays loose underfoot and does not lock up. Walkway Gravel is a separate product for garden paths and footpaths.
Where a path has to shed water instead of holding it, 3/8" Crushed Stone is the finer washed option. It suits narrow trenches and tight drainage work where 3/4 inch stone is too coarse.
Under all of it, Type A Gravel is the Maine base course. It is crushed gravel.
Type A gravel carries driveways, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases. It compacts into a stable layer that spreads load over soft ground.
For ground that stays wet, 3/4" Crushed Stone is a clean washed stone for drainage trenches, drywells and pipe bedding. It sheds water rather than holding it.
Top Soil, sold here as screened loam, finishes lawns and seeding after the base work is done.
Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard, and each product page has a calculator to size the load. Have your numbers ready before you order.
At checkout you pick a delivery date, and a dump truck tips the load in one pile on site. The driver does not spread or spot the material.
Scarborough sits in Cumberland County, and delivery covers the surrounding area, including Portland, South Portland, Brunswick, Westbrook and Windham.
Have the drop spot clear and reachable for a dump truck, with no overhead wires or low branches in the way. Mark the spot if it is not obvious.
The truck tips the load in one pile, so leave room for it to sit where you want it. Keep vehicles and equipment off the approach so the truck can get in and out.
Type A gravel is the compacted base course under paver work here, because it locks up and spreads load over soft ground. Stone dust, also called screenings, is the bedding layer that sits directly under the pavers.
Across the Southern coast and Presumpscot clay lowland, the clay under the topsoil holds water, so the base has to carry the load and the drainage has to be handled separately.
Size your load with the calculator on each product page, then order online by the ton or the yard and pick your delivery date. Maine Rock Supply delivers bulk gravel, stone, sand and soil across Scarborough and Cumberland County.
