Open the calculatorMaine Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Gorham, ME, from bulk Type A gravel for driveways to rip rap for shore and bank work.
Gorham sits on the Southern coast and Presumpscot clay lowland ground, where marine silt and clay under the topsoil takes water very slowly. That shapes what you put down first.
Slope, swale and bank protection start with coarse stone. On ground where water moves and banks get cut, the big angular sizes do the holding before anything finer goes near the work.
Riprap is the heavy option for shore and stream bank armouring, culvert outlets and ditch checks. Maine yards sell it in ranges such as 6 inch and 12 to 24 inch.
#4 Crushed Stone, also sold as 1 1/2 inch stone, goes under that work where the subgrade is soft or wet. It stabilizes ground before a gravel course goes on.
For drainage trenches and drywells, 3/4" Crushed Stone is a clean washed stone that sheds water rather than holding it. 3/8" Crushed Stone fits narrow trenches and tight work where the larger size is too coarse.
Where a surface has to carry traffic and lock up under load, Type A Gravel is the Maine base course. Driveway Gravel, the 3/4 inch crushed gravel yards sell here, finishes the running surface.
Ordering happens online. You choose your material, size the load by the ton or by the yard, and pick your delivery date at checkout.
A dump truck then tips the load on your site.
Gorham is in Cumberland County, and coverage runs through Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Brunswick and Westbrook as well as the town itself. Deliveries serve Maine only.
Each product page has a calculator if you are unsure how much to order. The truck tips the material in one pile, so think about where that pile should land before the date comes up.
This is the longest working season in the state. Across the Southern coast and Presumpscot clay lowland, base, driveway and paver work runs from the end of mud season into late fall.
That timing matters because the clay under the topsoil drains slowly. A yard or drive sitting wet through mud season usually needs a drainage layer before a base course, not after.
Winter brings the highest flood risk to low coastal lots, and heavy rain scours banks and tidal creeks. Where marine clay banks are cut or undermined, they slump.
The ocean keeps winter lows milder than inland Maine, but the ground still freezes hard and thaws repeatedly. Frost depth in the southern coastal cities and towns is commonly about 4 feet, and the local building official sets footing depth.
Gravel drives and walks heave every spring as the frost comes out. Rip rap and coarse stone placed on banks and swales do not stop that movement, but they keep water from taking the ground out from under it.
Maine Rock Supply delivers bulk gravel, crushed stone, sand, loam and rip rap across Gorham and the rest of Cumberland County. Choose your material, size the load by the ton or yard, and pick your delivery date at checkout to get your order on the way.
Short answers before you order.
It depends on the trench and the water. For foundation drains, curtain drains and french drains, washed drainage stone such as Drain Rock or 3/4 inch crushed stone lets water move instead of sitting. Use 3/8 inch crushed stone where the trench is narrow. For heavy drainage or wet subgrade, 1 1/2 inch stone stabilizes the ground first.
A clear, reachable spot where the load can be tipped in one pile. The driver tips the material and moves on, so the pile location is worth deciding ahead of your delivery date. Have the ground firm enough for a loaded truck, and check that nothing overhead or alongside blocks access.
We would rather move a delivery than tear up your ground. If the site is too wet for the truck on the day, we will call you and rebook. Tell us in advance about any part of the approach that does not drain and we will plan around it.
