What do you order for a Maine driveway or a drainage trench? Start with bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across Maine from Maine Rock Supply.

Type A gravel is the base course most Maine ground is built on.

Maine sits on stony glacial till over granite and metamorphic ledge, with marine silt and clay in the coastal lowlands and river valleys. That ground moves water slowly in spring and holds it after heavy rain.

Materials Delivered Across Maine

Maine yards sell base material by letter and crushed stone by inch size.

Type A Gravel is the Maine base course.

Order Type A gravel for driveways, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases. It is a crushed gravel, not a crushed stone.

Bank Run Gravel comes out of the pit as it lies, unprocessed. Use it for bulk fill, raising grade and rough subbase under a crushed gravel course.

Driveway Gravel is the 3/4 inch crushed gravel Maine yards sell as the running surface on gravel drives and camp roads.

Stone Dust, also called screenings or crusher dust, is the New England default under flatwork. It beds pavers, flagstone and patio stone, and walkway stone.

3/8" Natural Pea Gravel is pea stone to most Maine yards. It suits walkways, dog runs, play areas and pipe bedding.

3/4" Crushed Stone is 3/4 inch washed stone here. Order it for drainage trenches, drywells and pipe bedding, and for drives that have to shed water.

Riprap, also called erosion stone, armours shore and stream banks, culvert outlets and ditch checks. Maine yards sell it in ranges such as 6 inch and 12 to 24 inch.

River Rock is round stone in Maine yards. It fills dry stream beds, drip edges, beds and borders.

Top Soil is screened loam in the trade here. Use it for lawn repair, seeding and finish grading.

Washed Sand, also called concrete sand, goes into concrete work, paver bedding and pipe bedding.

Ground and Climate Across Maine

Timing a delivery in Maine starts with mud season. Thawing ground holds water above soil that is still frozen, and heavy summer rain and coastal storms keep water moving after that.

Where Presumpscot Formation marine silt and clay sits under the topsoil, it will not take water. That ground shows up through the coastal lowlands and well inland up the Androscoggin, Kennebec and Penobscot valleys.

On the southern coast and the Presumpscot clay lowland, marine silt and clay fills the lowlands, with sand and gravel outwash on the higher terraces and stony till and granite ledge on the hills. Frost runs about 4 feet in the southern coastal towns, and the local building official sets footing depth.

The Midcoast peninsulas and Penobscot Bay carry thin stony till over granite and metamorphic ledge, with marine clay and silt in the valleys and coves. Frost is about 4 feet along the shore and deeper on the inland ridges.

Downeast and Acadia ground is coarse sandy and bouldery till over granite, with ledge close to the surface, broad outwash sand and gravel under the blueberry barrens, and peat and bog ground. Frost runs about 4 to 5 feet, deeper on the inland barrens.

The Kennebec Valley and the Androscoggin valley lowlands hold marine silt and clay reaching well inland, with river terraces and esker sand and gravel above it and stony till on the hills between. Frost is about 4 feet in the valley towns and deeper on the surrounding hills.

The Maine Highlands and the central hills are dense stony till over slate, schist and granite, cut by long esker sand and gravel systems, with marine clay in the lower Penobscot valley and wide areas of bog between the hills. Frost is about 5 feet in the Bangor area, where the city publishes that figure.

Maine's Lakes and Mountains run thin stony till over hard bedrock on the slopes, with ledge outcropping widely and outwash sand and gravel along the mountain valleys and lakeshores. Frost is about 5 feet or more on high ground and in the valley towns.

Aroostook County is a gently rolling plateau of deep, well drained silt loam over limestone, slate and calcareous shale, the farm ground of the county, grading to stony till in the hills and along the Saint John uplands. Frost is 5 feet or more, and the town or city building official gives the figure.

Snowmelt and rain runoff scour ditches, culvert outlets and stream banks. Marine clay banks slump along the coastal lowlands and river valleys, and storm surge and wave action work on the shore.

Base, driveway and paver work runs from the end of mud season into late fall. The window is shorter in the western mountains and in Aroostook County than it is on the southern coast.
