Open the calculatorMaine Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Detroit, ME, and the working season here sets the schedule. Frost has to be fully out before a base can be compacted, and the window closes earlier in the hill towns than it does down south.
Type A gravel is the Maine base course. Order it by the ton or the yard and a dump truck tips it on your site.
Across the Central hills and Penobscot Valley, the ground is rolling uplands of dense stony till over slate, schist and granite. Long esker sand and gravel systems cut through it.
That till comes with a hardpan layer. Water sheds sideways instead of draining down, so ground stays saturated through snowmelt.
A patio base set on that wet ground moves, and the pavers on top of it follow.
The fix is a clean, open-graded layer that lets water pass instead of holding it. On the Central hills and Penobscot Valley side, snowmelt and rain also scour ditches and culverts on long hill runs, so drainage around a flatwork edge matters as much as the bed under it.
Cold interior winters bring deep frost and a heavy thaw that heaves and softens gravel drives well into spring. Frost depth runs about 5 feet in the Bangor area, where the city publishes that figure, and comparable or deeper in the surrounding hill towns.
Bedding under pavers and flatwork is the layer that decides whether a patio stays flat. Get it wrong and the surface rocks, settles and holds water at the joints.
Stone Dust, also called screenings or crusher dust, is the New England default under flatwork. It beds pavers, flagstone and patio stone, and it sets a walkway stone into place.
Washed Sand, also called screened sand or concrete sand, beds pavers and pipe, and it goes into concrete work. Maine yards also sell underdrain sand for foundation and drainage jobs.
Type A Gravel is the Maine base course. It builds driveways, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases.
3/4" Crushed Stone, also called 3/4 stone or 3/4 inch washed stone, goes into drainage trenches, drywells and pipe bedding. It sheds water rather than holding it.
Top Soil, also called screened loam, is the Maine trade name for the finish grade around a new patio. It takes seed and lawn repair.
Quantities are ordered online by the ton or by the yard, and each product page has a calculator to size the load. Pick a delivery date at checkout and a dump truck tips the material in one pile on your site.

Short answers before you order.
Type A gravel is the Maine base course for a driveway. It goes down as the structural layer. On top, 3/4 inch crushed gravel, sold as driveway gravel, gives the running surface. Where the ground stays wet through snowmelt, a clean open stone such as 3/4 inch crushed stone under the base helps water pass instead of sitting.
Each product page has a calculator, and quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard. Have your project measurements ready before you size the load. If you are bedding pavers, the area of the patio or walkway is what you need. For a driveway, the length and width of the surface. Once you have a figure, add the material to your order and choose a delivery date at checkout.
You can order by the ton or by the cubic yard, whichever suits how you plan the job. If you tell us the area you are covering and the depth you want, we will work the quantity out with you rather than leaving you to guess.
