This is rolling upland country of dense stony till over slate, schist and granite. That ground holds a lot of stone and sheds water sideways, which shapes what goes under a drive.
You order online, pick your quantity in tons or yards, and choose a delivery date at checkout. A dump truck then tips the load on site in one pile.
That is the whole arrangement.
Eddington sits in Penobscot County, and we deliver across the county, including Bangor, Orono, Brewer, Hampden and Old Town. Deliveries go to job sites, driveways and camp roads throughout the area.
Bulk loads are heavy, so it helps to know where the truck can back in before the material arrives. Have the drop spot clear and reachable, and the pile lands where you want to work from.
Start with the project, not the material. A drive, a patio and a foundation drain each want a different stone, and the decorative work around a house has its own list.
For beds, borders and ground cover, bark mulch is the Maine yard standard. It goes around trees, along foundations and through planting beds.
Order it as Shredded Mulch.
Round stone is what Maine yards sell for dry creek beds, drip edges and shoreline edging. It reads as a natural stream bottom rather than broken ledge.
Small sizes work for beds and borders as River Rock, while accent placement and larger dry runs take Large River Rock.
Pea stone covers walkways, dog runs, play areas and pipe bedding. It is a rounded, clean stone that stays loose underfoot.
Order it as 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel.
Under flatwork, stone dust is the New England default. It beds pavers, flagstone and patio stone and sets a walkway base.
Order it as Stone Dust.
For the working surfaces, Type A gravel is the base course under drives, parking pads and camp roads, and 3/4 inch crushed gravel is the top course those drives run on. Both are linked below.
The soil here is dense stony till over bedrock, cut by long esker sand and gravel systems. Dense till with a hardpan layer sheds water sideways rather than down, so ground stays saturated through snowmelt.
The esker gravels beside it drain freely.
That split decides how a base behaves. On tight till, water sits and softens the subgrade, so a course of 1 1/2 inch crushed stone goes in first to stabilize soft ground before the gravel goes on.
On the free-draining esker ground, water moves out on its own.
Snowmelt and rain scour ditches, culverts and stream banks on the long hill runs here, and exposed till on camp and logging roads gullies out. Riprap and washed drainage stone are how those spots get held.
Frost is deep in the interior, and the season is shorter than in southern Maine: frost has to be fully out before base can be compacted, and the window closes earlier in the northern hill towns.
