Raising grade and building pads start with fill and sub-base. On low ground here, that means building the pad up before anything finished goes on top of it.
Fill Dirt, also called common borrow, is bulk fill and backfill. It raises grade under a gravel course, and it is the first layer on a soft or uneven site.
Bank Run Gravel comes out of the pit as it lies, unprocessed. It is a filler course and a rough subbase, not a finished driving surface.
Once the grade is up, Type A Gravel is the compacted base for drives, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases.
On top of that base, Driveway Gravel is the running surface. Maine yards sell 3/4 inch crushed gravel for that top course.
For flatwork, Stone Dust is the setting bed under pavers, flagstone and walkway stone. It is the New England default under flatwork.
Across the Southern coast and Presumpscot clay lowland, marine silt and clay sits under the topsoil. That clay takes water very slowly, so yards and drives sit wet through mud season.
An under-built base on that ground moves. Fill and sub-base have to carry the grade up and hold it, because a thin layer over clay will not stay put.
Low ground near tidal water backs up in coastal storms and high tides. Storm surge and wave action work on the shore, and clay banks slump where they are cut or undermined.
This is the longest working season in the state. Base, driveway and paver work runs from the end of mud season into late fall, and winter storms bring the highest flood risk to low coastal lots.
The ocean keeps winter lows milder than inland Maine, but the ground still freezes hard and thaws repeatedly. Gravel drives and walks heave every spring as the frost comes out.
Type A gravel is the compacted base under a paver patio, and stone dust is the setting bed on top of it. That combination handles the wet ground here better than bedding straight onto soil, because the clay under the topsoil holds water and will not carry a load on its own.

We would rather move a delivery than tear up your ground. If the site is too wet for the truck on the day, we will call you and rebook. Tell us in advance about any part of the approach that does not drain and we will plan around it.
