Open the calculatorMaine Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Casco, ME for two kinds of buyers: contractors running drive and pad work, and homeowners patching a camp road or resetting a walk. Type A gravel is where most of that work starts.
This is Cumberland County ground. Clay lowland sits under a lot of it, and that shapes what you put down before anything else.
Base and driveway surfacing is the core of what gets ordered for Casco jobs. The Maine base course is Type A gravel.
It is the compacted layer under driveways, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases.
Order it as Type A Gravel.
Below that, bank run gravel is the filler. It comes out of the pit as it lies, unprocessed, so it is a rough subbase rather than a finished surface.
Use it for bulk fill, raising grade and rough subbase under a crushed gravel course. Available as Bank Run Gravel.
On top, 3/4 inch crushed gravel is the running surface on gravel drives and camp roads.
Maine yards sell that size as driveway gravel, and it takes the wear from tires and plowing. See Driveway Gravel.
Washed stone is the other family worth knowing. 3/4 inch crushed stone, often called 3/4 inch washed stone here, drains rather than holds water.
It goes in drainage trenches, drywells, pipe bedding and drives that have to shed water. Order it as 3/4" Crushed Stone.
For drainage work below that, Drain Rock covers foundation drains, curtain drains and french drains. Maine plans more often call it underdrain material or washed stone.
Soft or wet subgrade gets 1 1/2 inch crushed stone first, sold here as #4 crushed stone, to stabilize before a gravel course goes on.
Sand and soil round out a typical order. Washed sand, also sold as concrete sand or screened sand, goes under concrete work, pavers and pipe.
Mason sand is the finer grade for mortar, brick and block, and screened loam is the Maine trade name for topsoil used on lawn repair and finish grading. Look at Washed Sand and Top Soil.
Across the Southern coast and Presumpscot clay lowland, water is the thing that decides how a job goes. Rain and snowmelt come off the roofs and driveways fast.
Under the topsoil, marine silt and clay takes that water very slowly. Yards and drives sit wet through mud season, and low ground holds it longer than the calendar suggests.
Higher terraces here are sand and gravel outwash, which drain quickly. Stony till and granite ledge sit on the hills, and the two behave nothing alike when you are cutting a grade.
That is the case for a washed stone drainage layer under a base course where the ground stays soft, rather than stacking more gravel on top of a wet subgrade.
The working season is the longest in the state. Base, driveway and paver work runs from the end of mud season into late fall.
Winter storms bring the highest flood risk to low coastal lots, so drainage work is often worth doing before the ground closes up. Frost comes out of gravel drives and walks every spring, and the ground heaves as it goes.
Bulk material arrives by dump truck and the load tips in one pile. Think about where that pile should sit before the truck reaches the site.
A clear, firm spot near the work is all it takes, with room for the truck to get in and back out.
