Start with Type A gravel, the Maine base course, and build the rest of the order around the job. Thin stony till over ledge is what most of this ground gives you to work with.
Order online and set the quantity by the ton or by the yard. Each product page carries a calculator, so you can size a load before you commit to it.
A dump truck tips the material on site in one pile. That is the whole of it, and it works the same whether the job is in Southport or over in Bristol.

Raising grade and building pads is where most of this ground sends you first. Marine clay fills the low ground, so a pad has to come up before anything finished goes on top of it.
Bank run gravel is unprocessed pit gravel, and it is the filler course for bulk fill, raising grade and rough subbase. It comes out of the pit as it lies, so it is not a finished driving surface.
Order it through Bank Run Gravel.
Type A gravel is the crushed gravel base course that goes over that fill. It carries driveways, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases.
Order it as Type A Gravel.
Where you need bulk fill or backfill instead of a graded course, Fill Dirt is the common borrow that gets a site up to grade.
For the running surface on a gravel drive, 3/4 inch crushed gravel is the size Maine yards sell for the top course. See Driveway Gravel.
Under pavers, flagstone or a patio, stone dust is the New England setting bed. It beds flatwork through Stone Dust.
Wet ground needs a clean open stone rather than a fines-bearing one. Drain Rock and 3/4" Crushed Stone shed water in trenches, drywells and pipe bedding.
Across the Midcoast peninsulas and Penobscot Bay, thin stony till sits over granite and metamorphic ledge on the ridges. Presumpscot marine clay and silt fill the valleys and coves, with pockets of outwash sand and gravel between them.
Ledge close to the surface gives water nowhere to go. Where marine clay fills the low ground between ridges, it holds water at the surface through snowmelt and mud season.
That is why an under-built base shows up so fast here. A pad or drive that skips the fill and sub-base work settles and pumps once the clay underneath stays wet.
On the shoreline, wave action and storm surge work on an elaborate coast. Scour hits culverts and stream crossings on steep short runs to the sea, and clay banks slump along the tidal rivers.
Work runs from the end of mud season into late fall, and access narrows the shoulder seasons at either end. Springs bring repeated freeze and thaw, which heaves gravel drives, camp roads and unpaved landings.
Type A gravel is the base course most Southport work builds on, and it is the material to start with when you are raising grade or cutting in a pad. Pair it with bank run gravel underneath and the right drainage stone where water sits.

Short answers before you order.
Stone dust is the setting bed under pavers, flagstone and patio work, and it is the New England default under flatwork. It goes over a compacted gravel base, not straight onto soil or clay. On this ground the base course matters as much as the bedding, so plan on Type A gravel beneath it and stone dust on top.
