Open the calculatorMaine Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Bernard, ME, and Type A gravel is the base most local work starts from. This stretch of the Downeast coast runs on shallow soil over ledge, with bog and peat holding water on the surface in plenty of spots.
That ground decides how deep a base has to go before anything gets built on it. Order online by the ton or the yard and a truck tips the load on your site.
Coarse stone does the heavy work on this coast. Slope, swale and bank protection all want large angular rock that stays put once it is placed.
Riprap is the armouring stone for shore and stream bank work, culvert outlets and ditch checks. Maine yards sell it in ranges such as 6 inch and 12 to 24 inch.
#4 Crushed Stone, sold locally as 1 1/2 inch stone, stabilizes soft, wet subgrade before a gravel course goes on. Its angular shape lets it lock up under load.
3/4" Crushed Stone is the washed stone for drainage trenches, drywells and pipe bedding, where water has to shed rather than sit.
Type A Gravel is the Maine base course for driveways, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases.
Bank Run Gravel comes out of the pit as it lies, unprocessed, so it is a filler course for bulk fill and raising grade rather than a finished driving surface.
Driveway Gravel is 3/4 inch crushed gravel, the running surface on gravel drives and camp roads.
Stone Dust, or screenings, is the New England default setting bed under pavers, flagstone and walkway stone.
Top Soil, sold here as screened loam, covers lawn repair, seeding and finish grading. Fill Dirt, or common borrow, handles bulk fill and backfill under a gravel course.

A dump truck then tips the material in one pile on your site.
The working season is short here, with a late spring thaw near the water and fog and damp that slow curing and compaction. Mid-season is the practical window for base and paver work.
Across the Downeast coast and blueberry barrens, shallow soil over ledge and wide areas of bog and peat leave water sitting on the surface. The outwash barrens drain almost too fast and wash out unbound surfaces.
That split shapes material choice. Where water sits, a clean washed stone like Drain Rock gives it somewhere to go.
Where ground is soft, coarse angular stone stabilizes it first.
Erosion pressure is real on this coast, with some of the largest tides on the coast and surge and wave action on exposed granite shoreline. Runoff scour shows up on the sandy barrens and at culvert outlets, which is where riprap and ditch checks earn their place.
Long cold winters with heavy frost bring heaving on gravel roads and camp drives every spring. The local building official sets footing depth, and footings are not something a gravel course handles.

Short answers before you order.
It depends on what the water is doing. For foundation drains, curtain drains and french drains, use Drain Rock, a clean washed stone that lets water move. For a drainage trench or drywell, 3/4 inch crushed stone is the usual choice. In tight spots where that size is too coarse, 3/8 inch crushed stone works. Heavy drainage on wet subgrade calls for #4 Crushed Stone.
Have the drop area clear and reachable so the truck can back in and tip the load. The material arrives in one pile, so pick a spot that keeps it out of the way of your work. If you are staging a project, make sure the surface can take the weight of a loaded truck before the date you picked at checkout.
