Open the calculatorIf you are planning gravel and aggregate delivery in Hope, ME, the first question is usually what to put down. Maine Rock Supply delivers bulk gravel, stone and soil across Knox County, and for most drives and camp roads the answer starts with Type A gravel.
Hope sits on ground that decides a lot of that. Thin stony till over ledge on the ridges leaves water with nowhere to go, so what you put on top has to move it.
You order online, choose a quantity by the ton or by the yard, and pick a delivery date at checkout. Each product page has a calculator if you need help setting the quantity before you order.
A dump truck then tips your load in one pile at the delivery point. Bulk delivery reaches Hope and the rest of Knox County, including Rockland, Camden, Warren, Rockport and Thomaston.
Start with the project, not the material. A bed, a border or a dry creek bed wants rounded stone and ground cover, while a drive or a drain wants crushed material that behaves differently underfoot.
For beds, borders and tree rings, bark mulch is the standard cover. For a dry creek bed or a drip edge, river rock gives you round stone that reads as a natural run of water.
River Rock and Large River Rock both work for that, and larger round stone suits accent placement and shoreline edging.
For walkways, dog runs and play areas, pea stone is the usual choice, and it also beds pipe. 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel is the size Maine yards sell for those jobs.
For a driveway, Type A gravel is the Maine base course. Type A Gravel goes down as the base, and Driveway Gravel is the 3/4 inch crushed gravel that finishes the running surface.
For drainage, 3/4 inch crushed stone sheds water rather than holding it, which suits trenches, drywells and pipe bedding. 3/4" Crushed Stone is the size to know for that work.
Across the Midcoast peninsulas and Penobscot Bay, thin stony till sits over granite and metamorphic ledge on the ridges. Marine clay and silt fill the low ground between them, with pockets of outwash sand and gravel in between.
That mix drives the work. Ledge close to the surface gives water nowhere to go, and where marine clay fills the low ground it holds water at the surface through snowmelt and mud season.
An under-built base on that ground moves, so the base course has to be right before anything goes on top.
Erosion follows the same pattern. Wave action and storm surge work on an elaborate shoreline, culverts and stream crossings scour on steep short runs to the sea, and clay banks slump along the tidal rivers.
Riprap armours those spots, and Riprap is sold in ranges such as 6 inch and 12 to 24 inch.
Work runs from the end of mud season into late fall. Cold winters are moderated a little by the bay, but repeated freeze and thaw still heaves gravel drives, camp roads and unpaved landings.
