Ground on the Downeast coast and blueberry barrens runs from shallow soil over ledge to bog and peat, so what you put down has to suit the spot it lands on.
A thin base over ledge or bog shows itself fast. The surface ruts, pumps, and loses its shape after a wet stretch.
Across the Downeast coast and blueberry barrens, water sits on the surface where peat and shallow soil hold it, while outwash ground drains almost too fast and washes out unbound surfaces. The fix is the right stone in the right place, not more of the same material.
Winter works against you too. Long cold winters bring hard frost heaving on gravel roads and camp drives every spring, and the thaw near the water is late.
Fog and damp slow compaction and curing through much of the season, so plan base and paver work for the middle of it. The building official sets footing depth; a frost figure for another town is not a figure for this one.
Fines and screenings do the detail work on paths and walkways. Stone dust, also called screenings or crusher dust, is the New England default under flatwork, and it beds pavers, flagstone and patio stone.
It also makes a setting bed under walkway stone, where a fine, firm surface matters more than drainage. Order it from Stone Dust.
For a path that has to shed water, 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel is the other answer. Maine yards say pea stone far more often than Natural Pea Gravel, and it suits walkways, dog runs, play areas and pipe bedding.
Where a path wants a finer, cleaner surface, #8 Crushed Stone and #89 Crushed Stone fill paver joints and thin bedding layers. The numbered designations are spec names here, not yard names.
Underneath it all sits the base course.
For rough subbase and raising grade, bank run gravel comes out of the pit as it lies, unprocessed, so it is a filler course rather than a finished driving surface. Order it from Bank Run Gravel.
The running surface on a gravel drive is usually 3/4 inch crushed gravel, sold here as Driveway Gravel.
Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard, and each product page has a calculator. Size the load there before you check out, then pick your delivery date.

A dump truck tips your load in one pile on site. Have the spot clear and reachable, and the material lands where the truck can back in.

Short answers before you order.
Clear the drop spot and make sure the truck can reach it, with no low wires, soft ground or parked vehicles in the way. The driver tips the load in one pile and does not spread it. If the ground is soft or the access is tight, pick a spot near the road instead and move the material from there.
Stone dust is the usual setting bed under pavers and flagstone, over a compacted Type A gravel base. On ground that holds water, put a clean drainage stone below the base first.
You can order by the ton or by the cubic yard, whichever suits how you plan the job. If you tell us the area you are covering and the depth you want, we will work the quantity out with you rather than leaving you to guess.
