Open the calculatorMaine Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Millinocket, ME for two kinds of buyers: contractors building patios, pads and camp roads, and homeowners fixing a drive or bedding a walkway. Type A gravel is the base course most of that work starts from.
This part of the state sits on dense stony till, and the ground stays wet well into spring, so what goes under a patio matters as much as what shows on top.
Across the Central hills and Penobscot Valley, the ground is dense stony till over slate, schist and granite. A hardpan layer sheds water sideways instead of down, so a patio dug into that ground can sit on saturated soil after snowmelt.
A thin base course is what shows that first. The surface rocks, the joints open, and the pavers settle at different rates.
The fix is a base that carries load without holding water. Type A gravel is the Maine base course for that job.
Frost is deep in the interior, with a long freeze and a heavy thaw that softens drives and gravel roads into spring. Bangor publishes a frost depth of about 5 feet, and hill towns run comparable or deeper.
That figure belongs to Bangor, not to every town in the county.
The working season is shorter here than in southern Maine. Frost has to be fully out before a base can be compacted, and the window closes earlier in the northern hill towns.
Snowmelt and rain scour ditches, culverts and stream banks on long hill runs. Exposed till on camp roads gullies, and the Penobscot and its tributaries cut at their banks.
Bedding under pavers and flatwork is where a patio is won or lost. Stone dust is the New England default under flatwork, and Maine yards call it screenings or crusher dust just as often.
Stone Dust beds pavers, flagstone and patio stone, and it sets a walkway stone in place. It packs tight and holds a level plane under a flat surface.
Type A Gravel is the base course under drives, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases. Maine pits and yards sell it under that letter.
Washed Sand, sold as screened sand or concrete sand, beds pavers and runs under concrete work. Maine yards also sell underdrain sand for foundation and drainage work.
3/4" Crushed Stone goes into drainage trenches, drywells and pipe bedding, and into drives that have to shed water rather than hold it.
Top Soil, which Maine calls screened loam, finishes grade around a patio and repairs the lawn the excavation tore up.

Short answers before you order.
Type A gravel is the base course for a Maine drive, and 3/4 inch crushed gravel is the running surface on top of it. In this ground, where till and hardpan hold water, a clean drainage layer underneath helps the base shed water instead of sitting in it. Bank run gravel works as bulk fill and rough subbase, but it comes out of the pit unprocessed, so it is not a finished driving surface.
Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard, and each product page carries a calculator for sizing a load. Have your measurements ready before you order. For a patio, that means the area you are bedding and the depth of the bedding layer you plan to place.
Place the order with the date you want and we confirm the delivery window back to you. Give us as much notice as you can for Millinocket so you get the slot you want rather than the one that is left, and tell us up front if the site is only reachable at certain times.
