Materials for Winn Projects

Decorative rock carries a lot of yards here. Round stone and large round stone build dry creek beds, line drip edges and edge beds and borders where broken ledge would look wrong.

Pea stone is the walkway, dog run and play area size. Maine yards say pea stone far more often than Natural Pea Gravel, and 3/8 inch pea stone stays put underfoot.

Bark mulch handles beds, borders and tree rings. For slope work, erosion control mix is the separate product.

Under the decorative layers, the working materials stay the same. Start with what the project is, then order to it.

Driveways and camp roads

Use Type A Gravel as the Maine base course.

Top the base with Driveway Gravel, the 3/4 inch crushed gravel yards here sell for the running surface. For rough subbase and raising grade, Bank Run Gravel is unprocessed pit gravel and a filler course, never a finished driving surface.

Patios, walkways and bedding

Bed pavers, flagstone and patio stone on Stone Dust, also called screenings or crusher dust. It is the New England default under flatwork.

For a garden path, Walkway Gravel works as a footpath surface. Send pea stone or stone dust instead when the path crosses mud.

Drainage and wet ground

3/4" Crushed Stone, sold as 3/4 stone or 3/4 inch washed stone, handles drainage trenches, drywells and drives that have to shed water rather than hold it.

For heavy drainage, wet subgrade or stabilizing soft ground before a gravel course goes on, use #4 Crushed Stone, the 1 1/2 inch stone. Tight trenches take 3/8 inch stone instead.

Foundation and french drains call for Drain Rock. Maine plans often say underdrain material or washed stone.

Ground and Conditions in Winn

The Central hills and Penobscot Valley sit on rolling uplands of dense stony till over slate, schist and granite. Marine clay lies in the lower valley, with bog and wet till between the hills.

That dense till carries a hardpan layer. Water sheds sideways rather than down, so ground stays saturated through snowmelt while the esker gravels beside it drain freely.

Under-built bases show it first. Till that never drains softens a drive that was never given a drainage layer, so washed stone goes in before the gravel course does.

Snowmelt and rain scour ditches, culverts and stream banks on long hill runs. Expect gullying in exposed till on logging and camp roads and bank cutting along the Penobscot and its tributaries.

Rip rap armours those banks and culvert outlets.

The working season is shorter than in southern Maine. Frost has to be fully out before a base can be compacted, and the window closes earlier in the northern hill towns.

Cold interior winters drive deep frost, and a heavy thaw heaves and softens gravel roads and drives well into spring. Frost depth runs about 5 feet in the Bangor area, and footing depth is set by the building official.
