Open the calculatorMaine Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Springfield, ME, and the working season here is short. Frost has to be fully out before a base can be compacted, and the window closes earlier in the northern hill towns.
Type A gravel is the base course most of this work starts from. Order it online by the ton or the yard, and a dump truck brings it to your site in Penobscot County.
Across the Central hills and Penobscot Valley, dense stony till sits over slate, schist and granite. A hardpan layer sheds water sideways instead of down, so ground stays saturated through snowmelt.
A thin base shows that fast. The material pumps, ruts form on the first warm week, and the surface never locks up.
The fix is a thicker compacted course over a clean drainage layer, not more fines on top.
Erosion runs the same way. Snowmelt and rain scour ditches, culverts and stream banks on long hill runs, and exposed till gullies on camp and logging roads.
Timing matters as much as material. Deep interior frost heaves and softens gravel drives well into spring, so a load placed on ground that has not drained is wasted work.
Paths and walkways are where the fine materials earn their place. Fines and screenings bed flatwork and finish a footpath surface here, and they behave very differently from a coarse base course.
Stone Dust, also called screenings or crusher dust, is the New England default under pavers, flagstone and patio stone. It packs into a tight setting bed under flatwork.
3/8" Natural Pea Gravel, which Maine yards call pea stone, suits walkways, dog runs, play areas and pipe bedding. It stays loose underfoot, so it is a surface rather than a base.
Type A Gravel is the Maine base course.
Driveway Gravel, sold as 3/4 inch crushed gravel, is the top course on gravel drives. Washed Sand beds pavers and serves concrete and drainage work.
Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard, and each product page has a calculator to help you decide which. Place the order online and pick a delivery date at checkout.
Delivery covers Springfield and the rest of Penobscot County, including Bangor, Orono, Brewer, Hampden and Old Town. A dump truck tips the load in one pile at the address you give.
Have the drop spot clear and reachable before the truck arrives, with room for the pile to sit. Once it is tipped, the material stays where it lands.

Maine Rock Supply delivers bulk gravel, stone and soil across Springfield and Penobscot County.
Short answers before you order.
Have the drop area clear of vehicles, brush and anything you do not want buried. The truck needs a reachable spot with room for a tipped pile. Check for overhead wires and low branches on the approach. A dump truck tips the load in one pile, so pick a spot where that pile can sit without blocking the road or a doorway, and where you can move material from it later.
Stone dust is the usual setting bed under pavers, flagstone and walkway stone in this part of Maine. It compacts tight and holds a level surface. Beneath it, a compacted Type A gravel course carries the load, because dense till and hardpan shed water sideways and leave ground soft through spring. Pea stone stays loose and is a surface for paths, not a base under flatwork.
You can order by the ton or by the cubic yard, whichever suits how you plan the job. If you tell us the area you are covering and the depth you want, we will work the quantity out with you rather than leaving you to guess.
