Open the calculatorIf your ditch is cutting deeper every spring, or your camp road bank is sliding into the culvert, the answer is usually bigger stone. Maine Rock Supply brings gravel and aggregate delivery in Lee, ME, with rip rap and washed stone sized for slope, swale and bank work.
The ground here is dense stony till over slate, schist and granite, so meltwater runs sideways instead of soaking in. Type A gravel handles the base work; coarse stone handles everything the water is trying to move.
Start with the coarsest stone when the job is holding a bank or a ditch in place. Riprap is the armouring size, used on shore and stream banks, culvert outlets and ditch checks.
Maine yards sell it in ranges such as 6 inch and 12 to 24 inch.
Below that, #4 Crushed Stone takes heavy drainage, wet subgrade and soft ground that needs stabilizing before a gravel course goes on. Yards here list this size in inches rather than by number.
3/4" Crushed Stone is the washed drainage size for trenches, drywells and pipe bedding. It sheds water rather than holding it, which suits till ground that stays saturated through snowmelt.
Once the water is handled, build the driving surface. Type A Gravel is the Maine base course for driveways, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases.
Finish flatwork with Stone Dust, called screenings or crusher dust. It is the New England default bedding under pavers, flagstone and walkway stone.

A dump truck then tips the material on site in one pile.
Lee sits in Penobscot County, and delivery covers the surrounding towns, including Bangor, Orono, Brewer, Hampden and Old Town. Whether the site is a house lot, a camp road or a culvert outfall, the load arrives the same way.
Have the pile location cleared and reachable before the truck arrives, and keep vehicles and equipment out of the way. Coarse stone for a bank job is heavy, so the spot you choose should be where you want it to sit.
The working season here is shorter than in southern Maine. Frost has to be fully out before a base can be compacted, and the window closes earlier in the northern hill towns.
Across the Central hills and Penobscot Valley, dense till with a hardpan layer sheds water sideways rather than down, so ground stays saturated through snowmelt. Esker gravels beside it drain freely, which is why drainage layers matter as much as the base.
Snowmelt and rain scour ditches, culverts and stream banks on long hill runs, and exposed till on logging and camp roads gullies quickly. That is the case for rip rap at outlets and ditch checks, and washed stone in the trench behind it.
Maine Rock Supply delivers rip rap, washed stone, Type A gravel and stone dust across Lee and the surrounding Penobscot County towns. Order online, size the load by the ton or yard, and choose your delivery date at checkout.
When the bank is cutting or the ditch is deepening, the right stone fixes it.
Short answers before you order.
For foundation drains, curtain drains and french drains, use washed stone that stays open, such as Drain Rock or 3/4 inch crushed stone. For heavy drainage and wet subgrade, #4 crushed stone is the larger, more angular option. Coarse rip rap belongs at culvert outlets, ditch checks and stream banks where flow is scouring the ground.
Have the pile location cleared, firm and reachable, with vehicles and equipment moved out of the way. The truck tips the load in one pile, so the spot you pick is where the material stays. Have your order confirmation handy and make sure the access route into the site is open before the delivery date.
Wherever you tell us, as long as the truck can safely reach it. Mark the spot before the delivery and someone should be on site to point the driver to it. If nobody can be there, leave clear instructions when you order and we will follow them.
