On the Aroostook plateau and Saint John uplands, the ground runs to deep silt loam over limestone, slate and calcareous shale. That shapes what you put on top of it, from Type A gravel under a drive to screened loam over a rough grade.
Grading and bed prep start with soil and fill, so that is where a lot of ground work begins. Screened loam is the Maine trade name for topsoil, and it goes down where you want grass to take.
Use Top Soil for lawn repair, seeding and finish grading. Unscreened loam is the rougher grade, and it suits a fill layer that will be covered later.
For raised beds and vegetable gardens, plain loam alone is too lean. Garden Soil is a blended planting material that holds moisture and feeds roots through the season.
When you need to raise grade or backfill against a foundation, Fill Dirt is the bulk material for it. Maine plans and yards also call this common borrow.
Once the grade is set, the base course is Type A Gravel. It is the Maine base course for driveways, parking pads, camp roads and shed bases.
Above that base, Driveway Gravel is the running surface. Maine yards sell 3/4 inch crushed gravel for the top course on gravel drives and camp roads.
Where water has to move rather than sit, 3/4" Crushed Stone is the washed stone for drainage trenches, drywells and pipe bedding. Drain Rock covers the same work on foundation, curtain and french drains.
For bedding under pavers, flagstone and walkway stone, Stone Dust is the New England default. It is also called screenings or crusher dust.
Sand splits by job. Mason Sand is mortar sand for brick and block work, and a fine sand under play areas.
Washed Sand is concrete sand for mixing and paver bedding.
Decorative stone finishes the edges. 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel, which Maine yards call pea stone, suits walkways, dog runs and pipe bedding.
River Rock, or round stone, fills dry stream beds and bed borders.
Start with where the water goes, because that decides the material. Across the Aroostook plateau and Saint John uplands, snowpack is deep and the melt arrives all at once into ground that is still frozen below.
The silt loam farm soils run and crust when they are saturated. On long cultivated slopes that shows up as sheet and gully erosion during snowmelt and heavy rain, and it shows up as ditch and culvert scour on the farm road network.
That is why a drainage layer matters more than a thick surface here. A washed stone such as 3/4 inch crushed stone sheds water instead of holding it, while a fines-bearing material will hold moisture against a foundation or under a slab.
This is also the shortest working season in Maine. The ground is frozen for much of the year, base and paver work waits for a late breakup, and hard frost returns early in the fall.
Frost runs deep in this part of the state, and the breakup heaves and softens gravel roads and drives. There is no published statewide frost table, so the town or county building official gives the figure for footing depth.

Use a clean washed stone so water passes through instead of sitting in fines. 3/4 inch crushed stone is the usual choice for drainage trenches, drywells and pipe bedding, and drain rock covers foundation, curtain and french drains.
Where a narrower trench or finer layer is needed, 3/8 inch crushed stone works. All of it sheds water rather than holding it.
