Type A gravel is the Maine base course, and it is where most drives and camp roads start. Washed stone handles the water.
Washed stone is clean, open graded rock with no fines in it. Water runs through the voids instead of sitting in the material, which is what a drainage layer needs.
Use 3/4" Crushed Stone for French drains, drywells and pipe bedding. Maine yards also call this size 3/4 inch washed stone, and it is the workhorse size for a downspout run.
Where a trench is narrow or the work is tight, 3/8" Crushed Stone fits where the 3/4 inch will not. It also works as a fine top dressing over a drainage bed.
For heavy drainage and wet subgrade, #4 Crushed Stone is the 1 1/2 inch size. It stabilizes soft ground before a gravel course goes on top.
Foundation drains and curtain drains take Drain Rock, which is washed drainage stone. Maine plans often call it underdrain material.
On the surface side, Type A Gravel is the crushed gravel base course. It packs down into a firm driving surface for a drive, a parking pad or a shed base.
Under flatwork, Stone Dust is the New England bedding material for pavers, flagstone and walkway stone. Pea stone, sold as 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel, suits walkways, dog runs and play areas.

Across the Midcoast peninsulas and Penobscot Bay, thin stony till sits over granite and metamorphic ledge on the ridges. Marine clay and silt fill the valleys and coves, with pockets of outwash sand and gravel between them.
Ledge close to the surface gives water nowhere to go, and marine clay in the low ground holds water at the surface through snowmelt and mud season. That is why drainage stone matters as much as base gravel on this ground.
Work runs from the end of mud season into late fall, and island and peninsula access narrows the shoulder seasons at either end. Time a delivery around that window.
Winters here are cold but moderated a little by the bay, with repeated freeze and thaw and spring frost heaves in gravel drives, camp roads and unpaved landings. Footing depth is set by the local building official.

Type A gravel is the crushed gravel base course for a Maine drive, and 3/4 inch crushed gravel is the top course that gives you the running surface. On ground where water sits, a clean washed stone layer under the base helps the drive shed water instead of holding it.
Wherever you tell us, as long as the truck can safely reach it. Mark the spot before the delivery and someone should be on site to point the driver to it. If nobody can be there, leave clear instructions when you order and we will follow them.
